Music & Quilting

 

As I was sitting in my sewing room working on one of  my quilts, listing to soothing sounds of YouTube music from my computer, I realized how quilting and music seems to go together.  OK, I know this is not a new concept, we all know how music and quilting go together, we all listen to it when we quilt, don’t we.

 

Depending on what I am doing, I love to list to old school sounds, love songs.  The kind of music that you slow danced too.  Then I will switch up to good old rock-n-roll music to get up out of my sit and dance to while I am ironing seams and bindings.  And when you are quilting your quilt the rhythm of the music will just guide your hand and maybe your work.

There is nothing like getting into the grove of piecing and quilting when the house is quite, no one around to distract you, no phones ring off the hook, not having to cook, clean and sew at the same time.  You know what I mean, especial those who have demanding family members.

Last night it was Boys II Men, tonight my chose of music was love songs, The Dells, Delfonics, and Stylistics all the greatest hits. When I start cutting up my binning it was Phil Collins – Sussudio, Do You Remember and Easy Lover.  Dancing and bobbing to the sounds.

Bowling Quilters & I Got Mail

 

League summer bowling is now over with, and I must say we had a lot of fun.  I ran into two of my UHURU Quilters Guild buddies, who were also on the league, Antoinette Johnson and Renee Baccus.

 

 

Last night, who should show up at the bowling ally but another UHURU member Charlie.  She came to support her daughter who is also a member of the league.  I might have to bring up at the next meeting that we start a Quilting bowling league.  We can bowl and sew binding on our quilts.

 

To celebrate everyone’s birthday, we had this beautiful cake make by one of the members.  We also had a live band, that played while we bowled.  It was a lot of dancing to the music and little of bowling, but we did end the night with a lot of fun.  Now it is on to the Bowling Banquet, which will be on 31st August, with Larry Graham as our musical guess.

 

This is what came in the mail yesterday, the rest of my Rush Hour fabric, at $4.95 a yard.  I still have not received my white commuter fabric which I paid $10.00 year.  Oh well, at least I have enough to make what I plan with it.

I am off to the family reunion today and will be back on Monday to finish off some projects and start on a new one.

Shopping for Fabric $4.95 On Line

 

I have been on line today shopping for a great deal on the Rush Hour fabric and Black Cat Crossing fabric for the up coming blog hops.  Now I really do not need the Rush Hour fabric for the hop, but want it any way.  I already have the Rush Hour Commuter Black and waiting for the white to come in.  I already have in mind what I am going to make with it and want to make sure I have enough, so I needed another piece of the fabric.  Found a great deal on Etsy Sew Today Fabric for $4.95 1/2 yard.  Had to jump on that right away.

I also know what I plan to do with the Black Cat Crossing fabric, I have a little time before I have to get it, so I am hoping that I will fine a great deal on that since I will not need too much of it.

I am still working on my second project for the first hope (See You In September).  I would have been finished, but had some house work that need to be done and took time out to hit the movies.

If you like James Brown’s music, then you will like the movie “Get On Up”.  It made you want to get out of sit and do the mash potato's and the camel walk.

Friday is the last night of bowling.  Yes most of you know I bowl in a summer league, I have not give you much insight on the league this summer but will have pictures later. 

I am also off to a Family Reunion this weekend, so will not have time to sew anything but a binding on the finish second project.

Computer Scams, Black Cat Hop

 

When I got home yesterday from work, I received a call from a Tech saying that he was from Microsoft Windows Service.  He was saying that they were getting reports that some issue were with my computer and they wanted to look into it and I needed to log into my computer for them to take a look.  Well, I was not born yesterday (although I am young).  Stop laughing.  I told him that I was running out of the house and would call him back.

I gave the Geek Squad a call who I use for all my computer problems and the Tech explain to me that usually these calls are scams, were they get excess to your computer and tell you there is something wrong and they will fix it but will cost you.  Sometime even putting things into your computer to make it not work right.  Thank you Geek Squad.  They check out my computer that was have some slow issues, and fixed it right away.  Everything is running smoothly now.  So watch out for the Computer Scams.

 

Madm Samm is at it again with Wendy of why-knot-kwilt  (what a great play on the words) as the cheerleader for this October Hop “Black Cat Crossing”.  The fabric is by Maywood Studio and it is not just bats, cats or spooky things in the night fabric.  Click on the side bar and check out the fabrics.  Madm Samm has a list of place that you can find the fabric.  I have a few other places you can also find the fabric – Fat Quart Shop, Fabric.com, Keepsakequilting.com and Fabric Depot, just to name a few.

If I keep joining hops, I might not be able to pay the light bill.  Fabric has gone up so high $9 to $10 a yard, and not just $9, but $9.95.  What is that all about. Well if you can’t afford to pay the piper, then stop following him/her around.   I still have money to burn, so I am following.

Hops motivate me to get out there and do my thing and also get me back on track with quilting and blogging.  LOVE IT, MISSED IT.  I am working on my second blog hop quilt as I type this blog.  Yes, I can do two things at one time, the computer is next to the sewing machine (sew a little, blog a little, and read a little).  Hey that is three things at one time.  I must be using a least 50% or my brain power instead of the usual 10%.  Have you seen the move LUCY, brain power is the thing, try to get out and see it or wait for the DVD.

Kona Solids In The House

 

Look at me, 3 back to back blogs in a row.  I am on a roll.  Anyway,  sometime last year, I joined the Kona Solids Club over a Sew Sisters.  Each month I would receive four 1/2 yards of colorful Kona solids to build up my stash.  These colors are great and this is just a sample of what I have in the stash now.

The reason for me to start collecting these solids (other then I needed, or is that wanted) some solids in my stash, is that I wanted to get into the modern quilt craze.   This is the first time that I will have to cut into my wonderful – colorful solids.

Below are the colors that I have chosen for my next quilt for the “See You In September” blog hop.  Which you will have to wait and see in September.

I found a very simple pattern from one of the millions of quilt magazines I have around the house.  I will let you know which magazine and the creature of the pattern during the hop.  Are you sitting on the edge of sit.  The great thing about this quilt will be that I will be quilting it myself.  Yes, it will not be a stitch-n-ditch but a straight line quilting (even I can do that).

I have already cut out the pieces I need for each of the 9 (you only see 8) fabrics and laid it out with the background fabric.  I only need to cut out the backing, batting and binding.  I should finish this quilt by Saturday (I bowl on Friday nights, so no sewing for me).

Fall Blog Hops

 

The Hops are coming the Hops are coming.  I know there have been a lot of hops on the blogs during these hot summer months, but with everything going on this summer I have not had a chance to join of even read any of the blogs.  BUT…… I was able to get in on two exciting blogs.

Madam Samm of Sew We Quilt is at it again with two new hops for the fall and many more to come.  SEE YOU IN SEPTEMBER is one of the first, with Shair of Living With Purpose cheering us on. 

We have to show 3 projects anything we want quilts, knitting, paintings, just anything.  The third project we have to use RBD Gingham.  For more details click on the See you in September button on my sidebar.

Save the Gingham, people. Grab the button.   I have never used gingham, and I know I do not have any in the house, but I do remember it, I think when I was a little girl that I might have had a dress or two or even a pair of shorts.  I just got my gingham fabric in the other day.  Check it out.

Not sure what I plan to make with the layer cake and that small roll, put when I get to it I will.  One project is already at the quilters.  My second project I cut out last night and when I get home from work, I will start putting it together.  It will be a easy simple quilt.

The next blog hop is Rush Hour.  Cheering us on this will be Carol of Just Let Me Quilt.  STUDIO E has some great fabric.  Not all that easy to find, put I did get my hands on one of the prints, with the other coming soon I hope.  The fabric is not really needed, but I would love to get my hands on it anyway.  Here is what I got in the mail already.

I am always rushing around from one place to another.  It will be interesting to see what I will do with this fabric.  The colors that can be used is red, white, black and/or gray.  I am thing bag here.  Can’t wait for the other fabric to arrive.

You have to love a hop, there is so many interesting things to see, and how about those give a ways.  I know I will be digging deep in my stash (not really)  I have already got some great things to give away during both hops.  So please click on the buttons on the side to see the other Studio E fabrics in this line, and get the info on the hops.

Well, I have to rush off now for my JOB, need to get paid so I can buy more fabric.  With the cost of fabric these days, I might be using some of my old clothes like they use to do in the old days.  Or you might see me pan handling on the street or the blog.  Watch out if you hang your clothes outside to dry, that dress might be in one of my quilts.

As The World Turns or General Hospital

The last couple of weeks to me have been like a soap opera.  My world is turning upside down, and most of it is in the hospital.  As most of you know Tom's father passed and the funeral was just a couple of weeks ago.  Tom's mother had a stroke the following week.  She is still in the hospital doing as well as expected, but not able to talk words or understand commands.  She will be going into therapy hopefully this week.

Last Thursday, my stepmother (mother always) took a fall and my father was very upset that he was not able to catch her.  She was sent to the hospital, put she is doing fine also.  Her blood presser was up, but she is taken it easy.

Friday after I got home from work, Tom came in and said he needed me to take him to the emergency room, he was having chest pains.  I tried not to worry, so I dropped him off and went bowling.  I got worry by everything going on, I might in up in the hospital next.  By the time I finish bowling, I went back to the hospital to check on him.  Now I dropped him off around 6:00 pm, I got back to the hospital about 11:30 pm.  They decided to keep him for observation about 2:30 am, I am about to fall over dead tired.

Tom is also doing well, changes to one or two of the medications were needed, he is off sitting with his mother in the hospital.  He came home Sunday and I was able to finish one of my quilts for a blog hop. 

Yesterday (Monday), Charlene and I went to take the quilt to Tomorrow Treasure, so I could have it quilted.  I hope to get it back before hop begins.

And finally, I will be a grandmother again.  Shonta told me she is expecting in February.  If it is a girl, I will be very happy.  If it is a boy, I will deal.  This will be her third child,she has two boys 12 years apart.  Shonta and Darnell are 12 years apart.  Did she not get the memo to stop producing?   Oh well happy days are coming and being a grandma, I will be using everything I have in the sewing room for blankets for the new arrival.  I guess the new one will get the one I started for the other grandchild 5 years ago.   Hey what can I say, I am SLOW.
