Movies That Make You Cry

imageO.K. this has nothing to do with quilting, but until I get back from my vacation, I plan to blog on something so this is it.

Today I went to work.  Yes, I know I am on vacation, put since I had to run downtown today, I stopped by the office to take care of some issues.  I was only there for 3 hours and off to the Old Post Office for my pedicure and eyebrow arch.  Got to look good for  my Texas trip.

SAM_2585

That is a great pedicure right?  Anyways, I got home about 12:30, and thought I get started and iron my clothes and get them packed.  Why do we iron our clothes, and by the time we get to were we are going, we have to iron them again, o.k. touch them up?  After ironing only three things, I decided to hell with it pack them and iron as I go.  That was because I was sitting in front of the T.V. watch a tear jerker of a movie.

Oh, yah, Stepmom, with Julia Roberts, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris.  It was a great movie and the song keeps playing in my head, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell.

As I was crying my eyes out watching this movie, I thought of other movies that I can watch any time and still cry.

Yes, the all time cry your eyes out movie “An Affair to Remember” with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.  The scene when Deborah Kerr is on the coach and Cary Grant realizes she can’t walk.  “If you can paint, then I can walk.”  Tell me you did not boil your eyes out crying,  I have to keep tissue on the ready for this movie.

“Brian’s Song, with James Caan and Billy Dee Williams.  It was a heartbreaking movie to watch, but man oh man, I love James and Billy Dee.  I hear the theme song to this and it is all over.

The last of the tear jerkers is Steel Magnolias, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLain, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts.  No one, but NO ONE can make you cry like Sally Field.  I seen her in movies crying and I cry right along with her.  It was a funny movie and heartfelt.  Olympia Dukakis had me rolling on the floor during the Funeral and Sally was crying and she said, “Hit Weezer”.  The crying stopped and I laugh.

I am not turning into a movie critic.  What movies make you cry every time to see them?

Discovery On The Cutting Table

As you know, I am vacationing at home this week, planning to clean up the cutting table and complete unfinished projects.  For the last two days I have done nothing but watch t.v. and look at the cutting table.

SAM_2579 This is what the cutting table looks like.  We all have them, and we even use it as a cutting table.  I seem to be using mines as the drop of spot for anything fabric, things from the mail and what I brought from the fabric store.

SAM_2580This morning when I got up, made some phone calls to my girls, fix myself some breakfast, and put a load of clothes in the washer.  Around 1:00 I went to 7 Eleven to get me a cup of coffee and to start on the cutting table clean up.

It is now 8:30 p.m. and so far the table still looks the same.  I did find some fabric.

SAM_2581This is fabric from the Sew-Sisters Quilt Shop which I am in the Kona Solid Club and each month I receive these most lovely Kona Solids.

I also found other things from fabric store I brought, but I must say the table still looks the same.  I am still washing clothes, I have done the minutes and newsletter for my Bee (http://weebeequilting.blogspot.com/) and now I am writing this blog.  I guess the cutting table will have to wait another day.  I am so a PROCRASTERNATOR.

A Joke Before Quilting

I am on vacation at home this week, which will give me  chance to clean off the cutting table and find unfinished projects to start on.  I have things I need to find that I want to start on and things I need to finish, so I thought I would start off with a joke a friend sent me.

Too Much Spaghetti

For several years, a man was having an affair with an Italian woman. ...

One night, she confided in him that she was pregnant.

Not wanting to ruin his reputation or his marriage, he said he would pay her a large sum of money if she would go to Italy to secretly have the child.

If she stayed in Italy to raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned 18.

She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born.

To keep it discreet, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write 'Spaghetti on the back. He would then arrange for the child support to begin.

One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife.

'Honey, she said, 'you received a very strange post card today.'

'Oh, just give it to me and I'll explain it later,' he said. The wife obeyed and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and fainted.

On the card was written:

Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti. Three with meatballs, two without.

Send extra sauce.

Believe it of not, I plan to fix spaghetti tonight.  Have a fun quilt day.

The Butler

Eugene Allen

This is Mr. Eugene Allen and he was also a Deacon and Trustee of  my church, The Great First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant Plains here in D.C.  This is who the movie The Butler is based on.

Trustee Eugene Allen, who endured a harsh and segregated upbringing in his native Virginia and went on to work for eight presidents as a White House butler.  He died March 3, 2010 of renal failure at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park. He was 90.

Mr. Allen and his wife, Helene, were profiled in a Washington Post story in 2008 that explored the history of blacks in the White House. The couple were excited about the possibility of Barack Obama's historic election and their opportunity to vote for him. Helene, however, died on the eve of the election, and Mr. Allen went to vote alone. The couple had been married for 65 years.

Afterward, Mr. Allen, who had been living quietly in a simple house off Georgia Avenue NW in the District, experienced a fame that he had only witnessed beforehand. He received a VIP invitation to Obama's swearing-in, where a Marine guard escorted him to his seat. Eyes watering, he watched the first black man take the oath of office of the presidency.

I just want to share these facts with you and hope you get a change to go out and see the movie.  We of the Great First Baptist Church, are very proud of his accomplishments and to have know him as a friend.

Confession Of A Quilt Blogger

clip_image002

Is there a Quilt Priest out there somewhere? If there was, I would be in confession right now and it would go like this.

Me: Sorry Father for I have sin. It has been at least 3 months since I have quilted any thing or blogged.  I have neglected to finish quilt projects, blogged or send out promised squish mail. My cutting table looks like the fabric is having its own private war. My brain seems to have gone on vacation without me. I have been sick off and on and I worry that my daughter and 2 grandchildren will have to move back into my home.

Quilt Priest: My child, you are forgiven for your sins. I want you to take one week of vacation to catch up with your brain.  Hit the quilt shops for inspiration, straighten up the cutting table, and visit your blogging friends.  Say 3 Quilt Hail Mary’s and be on your way. Your sickness will be behind you and your daughter and grandchildren will be blessed.

For those of you who follow my blog, may now pick yourself off the floor from your laughter.  As you can see, I think my brain is back from vacation.

woosah

I have had to Woosah myself back into shape.  Woosah is meditative breaths used to reduce anxiety with the intention of eliminating anger or frustration.  Mostly frustrations at work, an anxiety with family.

Since the heat wave of our short summer is coming to an end, I feel like I am ready to hit the sewing machine again and to play catch up. I am sending out some promised squish mail soon with goodies for 3 lovely ladies who have been waiting. I will be taken a week off from work next week and clean the cutting table and get my fabric back to order. I have a family reunion coming up August 17th and then off to Dallas, TX for a work conference. Any bloggers from Dallas give me a shout out and a quilt shop address to visit.

I am “WOOOOSAHHHH"(ing) my way back to you and my quilting.  So look out here I come.
